John Herbertson

We have a small pond half way down the garden.  In summer, the frogs bask on the side but often jump noisily back into the water as you approach.  This is my record of 2008’s frogs.

Choosing an appropriate form for the book was difficult but the onrush of the 9th of June concentrated my mind and I settled for a Jacob’s ladder which I had previously made as a toy.  My principal reference was “Handmade Books” by Gabrielle Fox with more than a passing glance at “Cover to Cover”.  Fitting my haiku into that format also presented its challenges but, in the end, I settled for a simple division into the three parts.  The slip insert is there in case the flip-flopping leaves the parts in the wrong order.

I used an uncial script, but lightened the letters by using a larger x-height than customary.  The original was written on Fabriano 220gsm smooth paper and then scanned, cut and resized in Photoshop.

The photographs were taken with a small Canon digital camera and processed via Photoshop.  Final printing of text and pictures was done on Daler-Rowney 210gsm Art Print (ink jet for water colour)
