Margaret Challenger
Mrs Anna Brownell Jameson, born 1794, arrived
in Toronto in December 1836 to join her husband.
She had lived in England and Europe and earned a reputation as an
author. She returned to England
a few months before the Rebellion of 1837. Illustrated with
Canadian postage stamps, issued 1935 to 2006.
Written out in monoline, using Pilot drawing pen, on Lana Laid.
Cover board finished with liquid metal acrylic, lines with original
paste-papers; fly leaves – Japanese fine washi. To add a bit more information to the above colophon – ¨
Colophons in printed
books are always included and are so in all the miniatures, printed or
otherwise in my collection. ¨
As you see, the
source book was written in 1837, and I have edited sections to fit the
format. I should not think
there is copyright on this. ¨ I collect postage stamps and often use them to illustrate these books. I searched a dealer's collection to get a couple of special ones. I had most of the others. The title page stamp shows Canada in 1867, the small coloured part only was settled . The Canadian stamp showing Niagara Falls, 20 cents, was issued in 1935; the stamp showing an early photographer, Alexander Henderson, 1831-1913 is another historic find. The stamp on the back page is about 8 years old - the thought was winter in rural areas hasn't changed much!
